Reflections
Commissioned by the prestigious Northern Reeds Quintet and is featured on their debut album.
This piece is a series of retrograded musical ideas that increase in intensity. Retrogrades are essentially passages played in reverse hence the title, ‘Reflections’. Each time a musical idea is reflected, the tonal centre shifts up or down by a 2nd interval creating unusual tonal shifts wherever they occur. Not only are each section reflected but the entire piece is reflected in bar 56. This provides the piece with structure as the musical ideas gradually return to the start, giving a sense of familiarity as the music progresses.
Instrumentation: Oboe, Alto Saxophone, Bb Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
